Asian Heritage Month: Special Initiatives



Be it resolved:
That May be recognized as Asian Heritage Month, given the important contributions of Asian Canadians to the settlement, growth and development of Canada, the diversity of the Asian community, and its present significance to this country.

On December 6, 2001, the Senate of Canada adopted this motion which I introduced. This legislative action only made official what has already been celebrated in Canada and the United States for many years.

In May 2002, the Government of Canada signed an official declaration to designate May as Asian Heritage Month.



Who Is of Asian Descent?
The definition of “Asian” may be inclusive and broad, and applies to people who come from or whose ancestors come from East Asia, South Asia, South East Asia, Central Asia, West Asia
